Location
Grand Valley State University is located in Allendale, on Michigan's West Coast, midway between Michigan's second largest city, Grand Rapids, and the beautiful sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. The University is located on 500 hectares, about 2 hours from Chicago and Detroit. Grand Valley State University is a four-year public university enrolling more than 22,000 students, including 400 international students from more than 65 countries. The focus on academic excellence is evident at Grand Valley. Due to small class sizes and unique faculty-undergraduate student research opportunities, professors get to know students on an individual basis. Professors, not graduate students or teaching assistants, teach at all levels. We also help students get experience outside of Grand Valley. 85% of our graduates have an internship or co-op before graduation and 25% of our graduates conduct research before graduation. With over 300 student groups, clubs and organizations, the outstanding student life program at Grand Valley State University offers many ways to get involved and meet new people. Just 15 minutes from Grand Rapids, where students are able to enjoy shopping, dining, museums and sporting events, GVSU is ideally placed to welcome students from all over the world.
Housing
Undergraduate students are placed in on-campus residence halls (living centers) or apartments. Graduate students are placed in on-campus apartments. The deadline to reserve housing is June 1 and there is a $150 deposit. The University does not assist in finding off-campus housing, but does provide information that students can use.
Student life
Grand Valley State University has over 300 clubs and organizations for students. The organizations range from academic to service clubs and all students are invited to join. There are a variety of free and low-cost events sponsored by the Office of Student Life. Additionally, students are able to attend on campus athletic events for free. The ISS team in the Padnos International Center has several programs specifically for international students. The Peeps program connects international and domestic students. This program allows new international students to get to know current Grand Valley before arriving on campus. Also, Bringing Together The World is an organization that aims to cultivate friendships between globally-minded Lakers by connecting international and domestic students through multicultural exploration and celebration.
