Can you introduce yourself and tell us where you're from and where you're studying now?
I am Yasmin, I am from Brazil. I am studying Business Information Technology at Seneca.
Why did you choose the University Pathway Program at ILSC Language Schools?
Eight years ago, I did an exchange program in Vancouver through an agency, and I really liked them. So, when I came back this time, they suggested the ILSC pathway program, and I trusted them.
What were your goals when you first started studying at ILSC Language Schools?
When I first joined ILSC Language Schools, my objectives were to re-establish my English fluency, discover a program that suited me perfectly, and ultimately, identify the ideal institution for my studies.
What was your experience like at ILSC Language Schools?
I had a fantastic overall experience. I met people from all over the world and made friends for life. It was a great opportunity to immerse myself in different cultures while learning English through a variety of methods. Most of my teachers were wonderful, helpful, kind, and supportive, as well as the staff.
Which classes, teachers, or learning experiences helped you the most?
Most of my classes were more academic, and I really enjoyed them, even though they were quite challenging. I believe all the teachers did their best, and each has their own teaching method. However, a teacher who helped me tremendously on this journey was Lief; his classes were so dynamic and immersive that I always looked forward to going to school when he was teaching. His teaching style perfectly matched how I like to learn. Another great teacher was Peter; his classes were excellent, and I really appreciated his teaching style and how he always made sure we completely understood the lesson.
How did the University Pathway Program help improve your English and academic skills?
The University Pathway Program was essential for my academic growth. It greatly expanded my academic vocabulary and enhanced my English fluency, making me feel much more confident. Furthermore, the program was crucial in improving my academic writing and sharpening my research skills, which are vital for my university studies.
In what ways did ILSC Language Schools prepare you for college or university studies?
ILSC Language Schools really helped me prepare for the collaborative environment of college. I learned a lot during my time there, especially how to deliver presentations in front of people and work effectively in groups. These experiences were vital for my growth as a student and boosted my confidence. Currently, I am applying these exact skills here.
How did the University Advising team support you during your pathway journey?
The University Advising team was incredibly supportive throughout my pathway journey. They guided me through the entire college application process, helped me choose the right programs that matched my goals, and ensured all my paperwork was accurate and submitted on time. In particular, I want to give a special thanks to Jenell, who helped me immensely during this process. She was crucial in my decision-making process. Her constant advice, encouragement, and professional guidance made all the difference.
What was the transition from ILSC Language Schools to your college or university like?
It was definitely a challenging start since everything was a new experience. Facing a massive campus and managing numerous assignments for different subjects felt like a lot. Thankfully, with the support and knowledge I gained from ILSC Language Schools and my ease in adjusting to unfamiliar places, I managed to adapt quite well over time.
What skills from the University Pathway Program do you still use in your studies today?
The academic research, writing techniques, and public speaking skills I developed in the program are vital to my daily routine. Knowing how to find reliable sources, structure professional presentations, and communicate clearly in front of my class has been essential to my academic success.
What has been the most exciting or rewarding part of your current program?
The most exciting aspect of my program is acquiring new knowledge and translating it into daily practice. This journey has shown me that although beginnings are really tough, it is never too late to pursue a new path. Exceeding my own expectations and achieving a sense of fulfillment that makes my family proud is truly the most rewarding part.
What challenges have you overcome during your international education journey?
I definitely faced difficulties adjusting to my new life, routine, intensive studies, and academic expectations. On top of all that, missing my family and occasionally struggling with the language made things harder. However, I am so happy that I am managing it all, and it is incredibly rewarding to see how much I am growing and maturing through this journey.
How has studying abroad changed you personally or professionally?
This experience has profoundly changed me. Personally, it has allowed me to grow and mature, helping me realize how resilient, courageous, confident and independent I have become. Professionally, the knowledge and skills I am acquiring will be crucial to my future by expanding my horizons and creating new, valuable opportunities for my career.
What are your future goals after graduation?
Following my academic journey, I plan to enter the professional field, explore the new possibilities available to me, and constantly upgrade my professional skills to ensure a meaningful career evolution.
What advice would you give to students who are considering the University Pathway Program?
If you truly want to pursue this path, my advice is to fully commit to the experience with all your heart. Be patient and gentle with yourself during the transition and adaptation to this new life. Always remember that even though it will be challenging, the reward at the end makes it all completely worth it.
What's one moment from your journey that you'll never forget?
Honestly, it's impossible to pick just one moment because the entire journey was amazing! I am so grateful for everyone who was part of it. Especially my family, I couldn't have done any of this without their love and support.
What achievement are you most proud of so far?
My proudest achievement is everything I've built and continue to build throughout this experience. I'm proud of how I handle every challenge and how each step forward is taking me exactly where I want to be.
