Opening its doors in 1895, Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a comprehensive teaching and research institution. The university is located in a small, friendly town outside of Chicago and enrolls more than 21,000 students from over 70 countries.

Within its seven colleges, students can choose from 56 fully accredited undergraduate majors and 100 graduate and doctoral level programs.

Northern Illinois University’s Career Services department strives to offer both students and alumni with career opportunities and assistance. NIU offers services such as career planning and counseling, internship and job search assistance, Victor eRecruiting job search programs, career, internship and educator’s fairs, resume and cover letter consultation, practice interviews, credential services as well as on-campus interviews with over 150 employers.

Through career counseling, NIU students are given the tools to identify career interests, address plans for career success, overcome obstacles to career development and take career tests to assist with academic decision making.

The university offers career workshops that teach resume writing, interviewing, networking, job searching, business dining etiquette, career decision making and identifying careers for specific majors.

Although internships and co-ops are not a graduation requirement at Northern Illinois University, all students are greatly encouraged to participate in as many internships as possible. The requirements and expectations for the internships are developed by the company and the student, and as a result, there are no academic requirements for NIU College of Engineering & Engineering Technology internships.
