Location

Kalamazoo, the home of Western Michigan University's (WMU) main campus, is the fifth largest city in Michigan, with a county population of more than 220,000 residents. The city is located midway between Chicago and Detroit, 225 kilometers from each, 2.5 hours driving time on I-94. Kalamazoo offers commercial transportation by train, bus and major airline.

Housing

WMU offers a variety of housing options. First, there are the residence halls. There are two areas where students choose to live in these halls, the Valleys of Main Campus. Valley residence halls feature suites where two student rooms share a connecting bathroom. These large, coed halls have a picturesque peaceful setting and are close to the Haworth College of Business, Intramural Fields and Goldsworth Valley Pond. Main Campus halls offer larger rooms and smaller communities. They feature community-style living where students on the floor share a bathroom. There is a separate section of the Main Campus halls designated for upper class and nontraditional students. Main Campus halls are close to academic buildings, the library, Bernhard Center and Student Recreation Center. WMU also offers married housing for families and on-campus apartments.

Student life

The Division of Student Affairs engages students in learning and personal growth in and out of the classroom and helps guide the development of students into responsible citizens and future leaders. It also supports and challenges students by sponsoring more than 300 student organizations, intramural and club sports, and recreation and fitness classes. WMU is committed to gender equity and as an NCAA Division I-A member of the Mid-American Conference and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Bronco fans have 16 varsity sports to follow-six for men and 10 for women. Each year, WMU offers scores of cultural events as well as more than 1,200 plays, concerts and exhibitions that feature the work of student, faculty and guest artists. In addition, the campus is home to Miller Auditorium, the third largest concert hall in Michigan. Miller features Broadway hits, comedy shows and internationally acclaimed performances of ballet, opera, music and dance.
