Established in 1866, Alabama State University (ASU) is located in Montgomery, the state capital. Montgomery lies approximately in the center of the Southeastern United States. About 70% of ASU's students are from Alabama but there also are students from other states and from more then 20 countries represented in the student body. All undergraduates first enter University College to complete a general (core) curriculum required for all major programs of study. University College provides individual evaluation and advising to assist students in constructing class schedules, and planning careers.
ASU has 13 residence halls on campus that are available to all students, from freshmen to graduate students. We're proud of our suite-style dormitories, many of which are new or have been recently renovated. Our campus housing is safe, and it offers a range of amenities, including furniture, parking, recreation rooms, laundry facilities and residential life activities.
Alabama State University charters more than 70 student organizations, including nine Greek organizations, a full range of men's and women's sports and 17 honors organizations.
In addition to social, cultural and religious groups, there are musical opportunities, such as the Marching Hornets and the University Choir, and departmental organizations for most majors.
Men's intercollegiate athletic programs include baseball, basketball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, softball, golf, bowling, and cross country. The ASU Hornets are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, SWAC, and compete at the NCAA Division 1 level.
