Founded in 1963, Spokane Community College is located in Spokane, Washington (population 202,000) - 29 kilometers from the Idaho border and 160 kilometers from the Canadian border. Because the region is surrounded by mountains, lakes, streams, rolling hills and forests, such recreational activities as snow skiing, biking, camping, fishing, hiking and summer water sports are readily available.
The college is located on 44 hectares of land beside the Spokane River. It has fully equipped computer, science and technology labs, tutoring center, library, sports center, tennis courts and soccer field. At the heart of the campus is the Student Union Building, which includes a cafeteria, bookstore, bowling alley, entertainment center and conference rooms.
Spokane Community College's HomeStay program is nationally-known and is chosen by nearly all of its new international students. Students can choose from a Full HomeStay (with all meals), or a Shared HomeStay (no meals). In all cases, students have their own private room, and in most cases a private bath.
HomeStays include Internet access and phone. All Host Families live near a bus line, and students can normally reach campus in 30 minutes. Host families are very carefully screened, and students are given a questionnaire to ask their food preferences, smoking / non-smoking, and whether children in the house is desirable or not. Matches are made carefully.
