August 13, 2015

Students at ELS/Chicago participated in the Global Discovery Program, a community that brought international students together to live and learn about each other’s cultures. Students participated in weekly discussions on international topics, Sunday dinners and discussion, and cultural excursions.

ELS/Chicago partnered with Dominican University in the planning and development of this program. International students were selected based on application. Each week students met for Wednesday night discussions on topics such as Global Consumerism, Education in Various Countries, and Religion. Each Sunday night students gathered together to share international cuisine and reflect on the experiences.

The students also traveled together to various neighborhoods and cultural festivals in Chicago. Upon completion of the program, all students gave a presentation on their experience and received a certificate of Intercultural Competency. Students in the program praised the opportunity to get to know American students in depth and have unprecedented opportunities to practice speaking English with native speakers. Dominican University and ELS/Chicago plan to offer the Global Discovery Program next summer.
