Location
East Tennessee State University is located in the town of Johnson City, located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Founded in 1911 as a training school for teachers with 29 students in attendance on opening day, the university now has an enrollment of almost 15,000. ETSU's more than 350 tree-shaded acres of campus comprise a certified arboretum. ETSU offers over 300 degree programs at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels in Arts and Sciences, Business and Technology, Education, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences and Pharmacy. With a medical school that consistently ranks in the top 10 in the nation for Rural Medicine, unique degrees in Bluegrass/Old Time/Country Music and innovative Digital Media programs, the university is large enough to offer a wide variety of classes and activities while retaining a close-knit, "small town" atmosphere. ETSU is accredited by the "Southern Association of Colleges and Schools". Many programs have been accredited by discipline-specific accrediting bodies. In addition to the restaurants and shops in the area, ETSU offers more than 250 student organizations and a well-equipped center for physical activity. Bristol Motor Speedway is nearby for race fans. The Appalachian Trail is close and natural beauty abounds, along with many opportunities for hiking, camping, skiing and white water rafting. The region also offers cultural activities like the Blue Plum Festival, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, the National Storytelling Festival, as well as the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra. Student life
ETSU provides over 150 outstanding undergraduate and over 150 outstanding graduate programs of study, enhanced access to education and distinctive educational and research opportunities to attract students from around the region and the world. ETSU has a student population of nearly 15,000, including Undergraduate, Graduate, medical students and medical residents. ETSU attracts students from all 50 states and over 60 foreign countries. There are over 250 campus organizations at ETSU, including fraternities, sororities, governance and religious groups, honor societies, academic clubs, and clubs for international students. All of these opportunities offer leadership and service experiences for any student who is interested.
