Location

East Tennessee State University is located in the town of Johnson City, located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Founded in 1911 as a training school for teachers with 29 students in attendance on opening day, the university now has an enrollment of about 15,000. ETSU's more than 350 tree-shaded acres of campus comprise a certified arboretum. ETSU offers over 100 degree programs at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels in Arts and Sciences, Business and Technology, Education, Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences and Pharmacy. With a medical school that consistently ranks in the top 10 in the nation for Rural Medicine, unique degrees in Bluegrass/Old Time/Country Music and innovative Digital Media programs, the university is large enough to offer a wide variety of classes and activities while retaining a close-knit, "small town" atmosphere. ETSU is accredited by the "Southern Association of Colleges and Schools". Many programs have been accredited by discipline-specific accrediting bodies. In addition to the restaurants and shops in the area, ETSU offers more than 200 student organizations and a well-equipped center for physical activity. Bristol Motor Speedway is nearby for race fans. The Appalachian Trail is close and natural beauty abounds, along with many opportunities for hiking, camping, skiing and white water rafting. The region also offers cultural activities like the Blue Plum Festival, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, the National Storytelling Festival, as well as the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra.
